Putting together the pieces

Currently exploring the subject of impressions, and the things we leave behind that show presence, or a lack of. Along with this is the idea of vulnerability and the delicate nature of these things. More to come.

MIAD Pre College Internship

I've been absolutely horrible with updating my blog over the last month. I've been working as a photo intern at The Milwaukee Institute of Art and Design documenting the activities and work produced by the Pre College students and the Creative Educators Institute courses that run through July.

I've had the opportunity to spend some time with Jon Horvath's photography students, and accompanied them on a trip to Sonja Thomsen's studio to engage in a critique of her new body of work, which was really beneficial to the students' experience here.

I'm really blown away by the work the students have been producing during their time at MIAD. Including work by Maddy Profio and Kyle Putney (who we're all trying to convince to be a photo major at MIAD next year instead of Time Based Media)!

Painting Progress

Roughly what the finished product is going to look like. I wish I would have collected more bark but its a 4 hour drive to where I found it so I'm just working with what I have. The figures are going to be painted, I just like to layout lines for myself to start out.

Hands on.

I started painting again today. I haven't had any urge to photograph in the last week, all I've wanted to do is paint so I'm just going to get it out of my system while its rainy and gross outside. So far I'm covered from hands to toes in paint, my canvases are primed and I have the sketches laid out. I haven't painted in 3 years so we'll see how this goes :)

Photography as an outlet.

I don't have the words, which is why I have a camera. Sometimes it bridges the gap between brain and mouth.

From the first of March.

He thinks I look lovely
in lipstick and lace.

He thinks I look lovely
as always.

As always
He knows not how unlovely I've been.

One on One With Kelli Connell

Reverie © Kelli Connell

Reflection © Kelli Connell

To see more of Kelli's work: kelliconnell.com

At MIAD today the junior level photo majors were offered an opportunity to have a one on one photo critique with Kelli Connell, a Chicago based photographer whose work has been shown nationally in many solo and group exhibitions. She also teaches at Columbia College in Chicago.

Our talk went really well, and she shared some really helpful insights with me. She pointed out my strengths as well as my weaknesses within my body of work and how to remedy those weaker photographs. She inspired a lot of new ideas and ways to re-shoot the weaker images to strengthen them. To anyone at Columbia: you're lucky to have her around.

Keep on keeping on.

Current progress of the work I started in November accompanied with my current draft of the artist's statement.

My work explores the transitory stages of sexuality, the shedding of adolescent innocence, and the development of romantic relationships through the female perspective. These ideas are communicated through the use of metaphor and of objects that hold classic symbolism. The work explores this perspective in a way that is bittersweet and honest, not like the cinematic, sugar coated ideals promoted to the youth.

Keys

© Emily E. Johnson

"Symbols abound in our modern world
everyday objects that one often sees.
But few things have such layers of meaning
as a simple ring with a pair of keys.

What do they open, what barriers destroy?
what engines do they bid to wake?
what object have they for so long protected,
that someone would otherwise take?

Or perhaps they exist purely in concept,
The abandoned keys to a persons heart
And should they unlock that long-hidden treasure
That someone would have a new start."

"What it all means, I don't know"

all images © Emily E. Johnson

January 18th.

All images © Emily E. Johnson

I've come to take these days with a grain of salt,
the fault is my own and I wear it well,
baring its' burdens in my own sort of fashion
of self reflection
of deep conviction.
An imagination run too far beyond tangible truths.
Flickering scenes behind a glassy gaze
from too long staring out this windows' pains
at a world beyond reach,
bound by the roots that sleep beneath these ever pacing feet.
Fever dreams 'til the grey light of a new dawn,
greeting each in a cold sweat of uncertainty.
What it all means, I don't know.
A series of intricate webs trap these vaguely lingering scenes from above this mess of tangled sheets, and my mind reels with the realness of it all,
its' likeness to reality.
Silently, begging nine more minutes, please.
And the alarm sounds.
